Love this comic and its commentary on foreign policy, corporatism, and civil liberties. But I'm not sure how you can claim "austerity" is a priority, given the exploding deficit, national debt, and ridiculously unfunded entitlement programs. The country is at the point where simply saying "tax the rich!" isn't enough.

The fake (but increasingly self-fulfilling, given Obama's payroll tax cuts) SS "crisis," Obama's deficit-hawk commission (most untimely during a recession/depression), and Dem deficit-focused messaging (bragging about being tax-cutting president), are but a few examples.

So I guess you share the Paul Krugman view of austerity, which isn't real austerity at all.

"Austerity" is commonly used to denote policies that are punishing to the most vulnerable, and generous toward the most powerful. Just as "conservatism" is commonly used to denote policies that include runaway military spending and generosity toward the most powerful, with stinginess toward the most vulnerable.

When there is talk of austerity in DC, it is always in the context of application to the middle class and poor. In typical DC usage, austerity is something done to everyone else, while the government funnels vast sums of money to banks, multinationals, etc. Yes, that spending comes out of debt which, as mere paeans, we'll all have to pay for, but in DC-speak, austerity is never applied to anyone but average people. So it is entirely correct to say that austerity (for most people) is a priority even as DC prints and borrows to give money to the very richest.
